My life changed the day I met Kelly-Anne's Mom Doreen.
We were waiting for the grocery store to open one early Saturday morning when we were drawn to speak to one another in a neighbourly way that was warm and relaxed while the rain fell in a quiet drizzle behind us.
Through the conversation I learned the true meaning of strength in the face of the most tragic experience a parent could imagine.
Doreen told me Kelly-Anne's story. She painted a picture of this beautiful young woman, athletic and smart. She told me about the way she was taken away. I stood glued to the ground wondering how this woman, this Mother, could be standing here in front of me. How could she survive while I could barely stand there and not fall apart just hearing her words.
I feel so fortunate to have crossed Doreen's path - to have had the opportunity to know a little of Kelly-Anne who surely inherited the same perseverence as her Mom, who continues to fight so hard to see that the crime against her daughter is not allowed to squeeze through our legal system.
It's taken me a long time to find the courage to write this little note because of the kind of emotion Kelly-Anne's story evokes.
I've learned from Doreen that with time, courage prevails and we are able to face the unimaginable.
My greatest respects to you Doreen,
Lisa
